BEST PLACE TO SCRAP A CAR?

The best option for scrapping your car is to use an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). Authorised treatment facilities can issue a certificate of destruction and can advise the DVLA that your car has been destroyed.

You will receive a certificate of destruction immediately when you recycle your vehicle with an ATF. Keep the certificate in a safe place to prove the vehicle was scrapped.

DO I PAY TO SCRAP MY CAR?

No scrapping your car is usually free at an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). An Authorised Treatment Facility is also known as a scrapyard or breakers yard and specialises in end of life vehicle recycling. Cars and vehicles can only be scrapped at ATF’s as they hold a special licence issued by the Environmental Agency – DVLA.

WHEN TO SCRAP YOUR CAR?

HOW TO INFORM THE DVLA?

DVLA will send you a letter within four weeks, this letter will confirm that they know the vehicle has been scrapped and that you’re no longer responsible for it.

If you do not receive a letter, Call DVLA on 0300 790 6802.

If you broke up the vehicle yourself, you must continue to tax it or declare it off-road (SORN). A SORN must be renewed each year until the vehicle has been taken to an ATF, or no longer own it.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED?

The documents needed to sell your car at an Authorised Treatment facility include:

• V5C Logbook
• Owner manual and book pack
• Part or full-service history
• A Certificate of Destruction (COD)

When an ATF agrees to scrap your vehicle, they will issue you a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). A CoD is a legal requirement to prove your vehicle has been scrapped.

WHAT IDENTIFICATION I NEED?

Identification, which can either be:

• Great Britain or Northern Ireland photocard driving valid licence
• U.K. or EEA valid passport and utility bill (not mobile phone), bank or building society statement, credit or debit card statement, council tax letter, documents of no more than 3 months old.
