Salvage vehicles categories
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) updated its practices and codes in 2017.
With new vehicles, materials and technology, the ABI needed to update their standards and changes were made to salvage categories making them more transparent. Buyers can now see the reason why the vehicle was written off.
Categories A and B remain the same, categories C and D ended, and were replaced with cat S and N.
Salvage categories
Category A
A written-off vehicle that must be scrapped and cannot return to the road.
Category B
A written-off vehicle must have its chassis destroyed and cannot return to the road, but parts can re-sold.
Category S
A written-off vehicle that has structural damage, but is repairable.
Category N
A written-off vehicle that has non-structural damage or considered stolen-recovered.
Category U or X salvage
Category U – Used Unrecorded
Category U-Unrecorded is not part of the ABI Code of Practice and denotes vehicles not classified as a total loss under the code.
Category U vehicles are not classed as salvage, but there still is a chance that they’re damaged.
Category X – Stolen/Recovered
Vehicles that have been subject to an insurance claim, but more than often have received minimal which can be repaired or no damage.
