The best place to scrap car?

The best option for scrapping your car is to use an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). Authorised treatment facilities can issue a certificate of destruction and can advise the DVLA that your car has been destroyed.

Obtaining a certificate of destruction
You will receive a certificate of destruction immediately when you recycle your vehicle with an ATF. Keep the certificate in a safe place to prove the vehicle was scrapped.

How and when do I inform DVLA?

DVLA will send you a letter within four weeks, this letter will confirm that they know the vehicle has been scrapped and that you’re no longer responsible for it.

If you do not receive a letter, Call DVLA on 0300 790 6802.

If you broke up the vehicle yourself, you must continue to tax it or declare it off-road (SORN). A SORN must be renewed each year until the vehicle has been taken to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), or no longer own it.

What documents do I need?

The documents needed to sell your car at an Authorised Treatment facility include:

• V5C Logbook
• Owner manual and book pack
• Part or full-service history
• A Certificate of Destruction (COD)

When an ATF agrees to scrap your vehicle, they will issue you a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). A Certificate of Destruction is a legal requirement to prove your vehicle has been scrapped by an Authorised Treatment Facility.

Do I need to pay to scrap a car?

No scrapping your car is usually free at an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). An Authorised Treatment Facility is also known as a scrapyard or breakers yard and specialises in end of life vehicle recycling.
